Essential Oils & Emotions
Have you ever wondered why you can smell something and your mood will change or you’ll be taken back to a certain memory? For me, when I smell fresh cut grass, I remember playing outside in the grass as a kid and feel very grounded and relaxed.
For centuries, scientists and psychologists have been trying to understand emotion and how it impacts our well-being. Although there is no definitive explanation about how emotion works, there is plenty of research that shows that essential oils can be used to positively impact our emotions and in turn, improve our well-being.
When we breathe in a smell, the scent is processed by the brain’s olfactory system which controls our sense of smell. The olfactory system is connected to the limbic system, which is the part of our brain where our emotions and memories are stored, so when we smell something, we will often have an emotional response or a memory come up.
Essential Oils and Emotions
John Hopkins Medicine has published an article that states "Aromatherapy can be used to enhance the quality of life as a complementary treatment through reducing stress, pain, and depression and by producing a feeling of well-being. Although there are over 40 different essential oils, the most commonly used are lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, jasmine, chamomile, peppermint, and geranium.” It shows these oils can be pretty powerful!
Using aromatherapy, you can trigger certain feelings and emotions with specific essential oils. This can be especially helpful when trying to process or combat negative emotions and lift yourself out of a funk.
Each essential oil has its own properties and benefits which affect the emotional responses it can produce, although these can loosely be grouped into types of plants that will have similar emotional benefits:
Mints, which have energising, invigorating and uplifting properties
Florals, which has calming properties
Citrus, which has energising and uplifting properties
Tree, grass and herbs have soothing, renewing and grounding properties
Spices, which have warming properties
